What Nu Showed in Its Earnings

Hey Digital Banking Fanatic!

Nu Holdings just crossed $5 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time, and the stock fell anyway. That's the kind of paradox that makes earnings season interesting.

Crossing the $5B revenue milestone is no small feat for a company that didn't exist 13 years ago. Yet markets weren't moved, a reminder that at Nu's stage, expectations travel well ahead of results.

On the AI front, no surprises: like virtually every FinTech reporting this season, Nu made artificial intelligence a centerpiece of its narrative. Whether that's genuine strategic depth or well-dressed buzzword bingo is the right question to ask.

Another thing I want to highlight is how they tried to reassure their investors that the US market play is surgically planned. “The bounded cost of entering the US Market is less than 100 bps on our efficiency ratio “.

What Nu is telling investors is simple: even if the US launch fails completely, the maximum damage to their profitability is a 1 percentage point increase in their efficiency ratio, in 2026 and 2027 only, then gone. For context, Nu already runs one of the leanest efficiency ratios in global banking at ~17.6%, so 100 bps is barely a rounding error. That's the worst case.
