Credit Agricole Expands Into German Banking

Hey Digital Banking Fanatic!

Germany is getting another digital-first bank, but this time it’s not a FinTech startup entering the market. It’s Crédit Agricole, one of Europe’s largest banking groups, looking to double its German retail customer base by the end of 2028.

The French group plans to launch Crédit Agricole Deutschland at the end of October, bringing together Creditplus’ operations, around 600 employees and 20 branches. The initial offering will include German IBAN accounts, Visa cards and savings products, with lending, wealth management and advisory services expected to follow next year.

But Crédit Agricole isn’t stopping at retail banking. It has also agreed to acquire IKB Deutsche Industriebank, giving it a stronger foothold in Germany’s mid-corporate market. The deal is expected to close by the end of Q2 2027, subject to regulatory approval.

It’s an interesting combination: build a digital-first proposition for consumers while expanding the established corporate banking business. Crédit Agricole clearly sees room to grow across both sides of the German market.

Meanwhile, a new report from zerohash and Ava Labs finds that 61.5% of banks expect blockchain to become standard within two years.

Here’s what else is happening in digital banking today👇

See you tomorrow!
