South Korea’s first Bitcoin-backed bank loans are here
Hey Digital Banking Fanatic!
What if a company could borrow Korean won using Bitcoin as collateral, without selling its crypto? Jeonbuk Bank is making that possible, becoming the first bank in South Korea to launch Bitcoin-backed, won-denominated loans for corporate clients.
The loans are designed to fund business operations, with a registered custodian holding the Bitcoin rather than the bank itself. Jeonbuk Bank will also use prices from multiple global exchanges to value the collateral and follow court procedures if it needs to liquidate it.
It’s a tangible step toward CEO Park Choon-won’s vision of a “crypto bank” and another sign of how traditional banking is beginning to work with digital assets. The key question is how far these products can go as banks build the legal and risk-management frameworks needed to support them.
Meanwhile, Taxbit looks at another challenge facing financial institutions: preparing for CARF and CRS 2.0 without doubling compliance work.
