Iberdrola, BBVA and Santander complete €150M blockchain loan
Hey Digital Banking Fanatic!
Blockchain in banking often comes up in discussions about tokenization and digital assets. But here’s a more practical example: Iberdrola, BBVA and Santander have completed a €150 million syndicated loan managed entirely on blockchain.
The transaction covers the loan’s full lifecycle, from execution and disbursement to interest payments, repayments and transfers between lenders. Developed by ioBuilders with support from BBVA and Santander, the platform gives authorised participants a shared, real-time record instead of relying on separate databases that need constant reconciliation.
Why does this matter? Syndicated loans involve multiple banks coordinating payments, documentation and contractual changes over many years. Using DLT and smart contracts could reduce administrative work, improve transparency, and make these transactions easier to manage. The partners now plan to onboard more institutions and expand the platform.
And while banks work to make financial operations more efficient, fraud remains a challenge. Incognia uncovered a Brazilian fraud operation that grew from 8 devices accessing 153 accounts to 159 devices accessing more than 11,150 accounts. Apartment-level location analysis helped expose the network.
